The lasik procedure to correct vision has been around for a number of years. It has successfully been used with thousands of people to return their sight to a place where they no longer need glasses or contacts. For many years the procedure was done the same way. The Z-Lasik, all laser Lasik utilizing the femto lasers at Behler Eye and Laser Center is changing that and becoming the preferred approach by eye surgeons across the US.
With the use of the femtosecond and excimer laser a small flap of tissue is created on the cornea (the surface of the eye) and lifted up. Small pieces of tissue are removed from under this flap to reshape the surface of the eye. At the end of the procedure, the small flap is replaced to protect the eye as it heals. Reshaping the eye this way helps the eye to focus light and create sharper vision.
The traditional approach was to use a small, sharp blade to perform the procedure. All laser lasik does not use blades rather lasers to create the flap and reshape the eye in the bladeless manner. Also called “bladeless Lasik” or “femto lasik” this technique has many benefits over the blade version.
While every surgical procedure carries some risk, all laser Lasik using the femtolaser is proving to have fewer side effects than the traditional Lasik surgery. The safety and precision afforded by the use of ZLASIK opens it up to more people than ever before.

LASIK eye surgery is a safe procedure proven to be effective for correcting vision. Every year, millions of people choose to have this surgery in order to regain their sight. In case you’re not familiar the procedure, LASIK involves using a blade to cut a small flap on the cornea of the eye, after which the eye is reshaped so that vision is improved. The surgery corrects near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Recovery time is relatively short; most patients can continue normal activities the very next day. About 90% of LASIK patients report satisfaction with the procedure.
But did you know that LASIK surgery can do performed without the use of blades? Bladeless LASIK is the latest in cutting-edge vision correction technology, developed after exhaustive research before being approved by the FDA in 1999.

LASIK eye surgery has helped thousands of people see clearly, but many have shied away from the procedure because it involved using a blade to cut a flap into the eye. Now, advances have allowed that knife to be eliminated in a completely all laser, blade-free Lasik procedure. The most modern techniques create a flap by using a high-frequency laser, the femtosecond laser also known as the femtolaser, so there is no need to worry about a motorized blade touching your eyes.
The blade-free LASIK method has more benefits than simply being less unnerving. Traditional methods use a microkeratome – a tiny, motorized scalpel – to create the required corneal flap. This knife can sometimes leave an uneven surface that may slow recovery or even interfere with vision. Another limitation of the microkeratome is the fact that it can’t be used if your cornea is too thin. The femto lasers used in the femto lasik or Z-Lasik procedure, on the other hand, can be adjusted to fit.
Overall, the versatility, recovery time and outcome of the bladeless procedure is often superior to that of the old-fashioned methods. Schedule a consultation today to learn more about the excellent benefits of the ZLASIK, blade-free LASIK!
The excimer laser revolutionized the field of eye surgery, allowing for incredibly accurate vision correction without damaging any surrounding eye tissue. This laser makes it possible to reshape your cornea and correct whatever your refractive error happens to be, whether it is myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism. Combined with the so-called femtosecond laser, the excimer laser allows your eye surgery procedure at Behler Eye and Laser Center to be completely blade free.
Excimer LaserThe excimer laser produces ultraviolet light, a cool beam that can remove a minute amount of tissue at a time, as little as 0.25 microns. When you consider that a micron is a thousand of a millimeter thick, you can understand just how accurate the laser is. The excimer laser is ideal for this kind of work because it passes little energy into the surrounding tissue, ensuring that it will not cause any unwanted damage to your eye.
After Dr. Behler determines how he needs to reshape your eye, he programs those measurements into the excimer laser computer. If you are worrying how the laser stays accurate, you can take comfort in knowing that most modern lasers have automated eye tracking systems. This means that even if your eye moves slightly during surgery, the system will track it and adjust accordingly.
The ZLASIK procedure combinesthe excimer laser with the so-called femtosecond laser, making your surgery all laser. The femto lasers creates a corneal flap, which allows the excimer laser to make the corrections it needs to make. This means nothing but lasers ever touch your eyes.

Traditional LASIK surgery involves using a motorized blade, known as a microkeratome, to cut the required flap before the laser reshapes the cornea. Many patients find this idea unsettling and may have avoided having laser eye correction done because of it.
With the femto laser, or femtosecond laser, the blade is eliminated. Instead, this laser is used to make the flap. This method, also known as Z-lasik, always produces a smooth surface because there is no mechanical action. It also makes the flap without dragging the eye’s tear film under the surface, which can lower the risk of infection. Best of all, patients don’t need to worry about someone cutting on their eyes.
One of the biggest other benefits of using a femtolaser paired with the excimer laser in the all laser lasik procedure, is increased patient comfort and recovery times. You’ll usually notice an improvement in your vision the very next day, with the full benefits of femto lasik – or ZLASIK – being realized in just a few weeks. Contact us today to for a consultation to learn if you’re a candidate for this excellent procedure!
FemtolaserThe femtolaser, also known as the femtosecond laser, is a new tool that allows the ZLASIK eye surgery to be performed with no knives at all. This is a great development for those who have previously shied away from LASIK due to the need to use a scalpel-like tool to cut a flap into the cornea.
The ability to precisely control the femtolaser allows the surgeon to provide you with results that can be above those gained from traditional LASIK procedures. You will be able to have a procedure that is truly customized to your eyes. You’ll also have a fast recovery thanks to the fact that the femto lasers always produces a smooth surface with the bladeless lasik procedure. These benefits add up to an extremely low complication rate and a great outcome.
With these benefits, it’s no wonder that traditional LASIK surgery has been rendered obsolete by the excimer and femtolaser. But, many surgeons don’t keep up with the times and prefer to stick to methods that they can do in an “assembly line” style; not at Behler Eye, where the most cutting edge techniques such as all laser lasik are practiced.
Here at Behler Eye and Laser Center, we never use assembly line methods. Our prime concern is your sight and your health. Therefore, we take pride in using the best possible methods for our procedures. Our laser eye surgery, known as Z-LASIK, offers all of the benefits you seek and lets you avoid the risks associated with scalpels rather with a bladeless LASIK procedure. If you a living in the Tampa area – in and around St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tarpon Springs and New Port Richey – contact us today for a consultation with Dr. Behler to discuss the femtolaser procedure in detail and learn how it can give you the sight you’ve been dreaming of!
In our efforts to continually improve our services and procedures, Behler Eye and Laser Center is pleased to introduce Z-LASIK vision correction using the femto lasers and excimer lasers to our area. Z-LASIK is the latest advancement is laser vision correction that is completely bladeless. With the use of the femtosecond laser, complications are minimized to a new level, and post-operative vision is improved. Blade free, all laser lasik, features some wonderful customer benefits including an overall more comfortable experience.
The femtolaser operates with very low pulse energy and very short pulse width, combined with very high pulse frequencies. This makes laser vision correction possible without the use of a blade or scalpel. The FEMTO lasers technology of using low pulse energy results in gentler tissue resection.
The FEMTO LDV Z also provides features that make it easier for us to use as well. What this means for you is a minimized chance of side effects, a quicker recovery, a more comfortable experience, and better vision!
We are always happy to keep you informed about the latest techniques available to you for improving your vision. Learn more about how the new FEMTO LDV Z can help the vision of you and your family with a call or visit to the Behler Eye and Laser Center.
The femtosecond laser paired with the excimer laser is one of the latest improvements to the LASIK eye surgery procedure. It uses extremely fast pulses of laser energy to create the required flap in your cornea. How fast is fast? A femtosecond is one millionth of one billionth of a single second. Needless to say, this type of laser uses countless numbers of these tiny pulses to create the flap in the blade-free, all laser, Lasik practice.
Before a laser was used for LASIK, making the corneal flap required using a mechanical microkeratome – basically a motorized blade. Patients were unsettled about the idea of a scalpel or other blade touching their eyes. For these reasons, researchers looked for a way to make the entire LASIK procedure blade-free.
The Benefits of the Femtosecond Laser
The new ZLASIK femtosecond laser used at Behler Eye and Laser Center is 100 times less powerful than the first generation of these lasers. This is a good thing – it allows for unmatched accuracy and patient comfort. It also gives the instrument an excellent safety profile.
Thanks to this increased accuracy and safety, patients have great results from the bladeless LASIK surgery. The custom flaps created allow for precision repair of vision problems and fast recovery times. Despite the precision, the femto lasik procedure is relatively fast – it takes only about an hour from start to finish, and merely seconds under the laser.
If you are in the Tampa area – including St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey and surrounding areas – and would like to find out if the new blade-free, all laser, femtosecond laser eye surgery is right for you, schedule a consultation or contact us at Behler Eye and Laser Center. There, Dr. Behler himself will examine you to see if you are a good candidate for Z-LASIK vision correction or another procedure. Soon, you’ll be on your way to great vision!
So you’re thinking about getting your vision corrected. Perhaps you’ve worn glasses or contacts for some time now, and you’re ready to be free of these older methods. You’re ready to take the next step in vision correction toward something more innovative, more permanent.
ZLASIK might be just what you’re looking for. Z-LASIK is a cutting edge vision correction technology that allows the LASIK procedure to be implemented in a completely blade-free way — all laser, no cutting blades. Blade-Free LASIK has many benefits, starting with the obvious: a high-tech cobination of lasers are used – both the excimer laser and femtosecond laser – for the procedure instead of the outdated blade technology. The blade-free lasik procedure uses the new Swiss Ziemer laser is used to make the corneal incision, allowing for a cleaner, more accurate, more precise cut.
Well, Z stands for Ziemer, or the Ziemer laser. Instead of the old blade LASIK technology, the ZLASIK Zeimer laser uses literally millions of small, precise femtolaser pulses. The result is a very accurate corneal flap, removing the potential risks that used to come along with the mechanical metal blade system.
The Ziemer laser goes beyond other laser systems (such as the Intralase, or iLASIK) with a number of noteworthy improvements and advances. The femto lasers, or LDV, eliminates the occasional complications that are sometimes experienced with iLASIK technology. For example, some iLASIK patients (about 7%) experience a marked aversion to and discomfort around light for a number of days after their iLASIK procedure. (This is also known as “transient light sensitivity.”)
This side effect is not experienced with the ZLASIK procedure, possibly because it utilizes a much more finely focused laser energy pulse along with greatly reduced energy per pulse. By comparison, the Intralase iLASIK has a less focused laser and a resultant wider dispersion of the laser energy throughout the cornea. With ZLASIK also known as femto lasik, you’ll experience more accurate results and a faster recovery time.
